- WHY IS SELF-COMPASSION SO IMPORTANT? -
Self-compassion is a practice that helps to regulate distress by enabling us to turn toward our suffering and pain with kindness, understanding, and validation. Our cultures teach us from early on that growth and success depends on our ability to critique, judge, and evaluate ourselves often in harsh and unrelenting ways. Thus, self-compassion is often difficult for us to get behind as well as practice. However, evolutionary biology and neuropsychology provides evidence of the healing power of self-compassion by showing us how it down regulating anxiety and reducing emotional disconnectedness in depression (Gilbert, 2010).
